Grooming the Learners
MIDDLE YEAR PROGRAMME AT CI
Choithram International’s Middle Year Program (MYP) gave my son Akshat the next stepping stone in his journey towards all round development; social, emotional, personal, physical and academic. He joined Choithram International in Primary Years Program class 4 when we moved to Indore. In his last two years’ journey he was inquisitive, picked up important transdisciplinary skills and learned essential components.
MYP provides academic challenges and develops life skills for the student. The teaching and learning is contextual. I noticed the sudden but anticipated change in both school’s teaching and Akshat’s involvement in learning process as a student when compared to previous years’ experience. The first prominent decision Akshat made in consultation with us was selecting French as second language. Service activities also form a key component of social learning where the student is expected to serve the community, one is living in. As per my understanding without assessment the teaching and learning cycles are incomplete. They form the most important link in ensuring what is taught in school is learned by student. The criteria of assessment are public and clarified to students beforehand to ensure transparency. Formative assessments form key tool in the ‘teaching-learning’ cycle, giving valuable feedback both to teachers and students to concentrate where efforts are required. Summative assessment and term-end examination at the end of key milestones evaluates students’ learning.
Parents’ involvement in the students learning is an integral part and a must to ensure most effective learning by student. Students do learn a major part of their curriculum at school but they do spend equally or more part of the time at home. Kids are more open to parents than anyone else. Understanding weak areas and where our kids are struggling and then ensuring this is conveyed to respective teachers is most important function which we as parents can perform in the learning cycle. This will not only ensure our satisfaction with our child’s learning journey but also provide key insight to teachers and school and help in improving their teaching plans.
Akshat has become confident and requires less support from us as compared to PYP. He can now do majority of his learning and homework on his own. We as parents are glad and proud to see this change in him. One of the key concepts that were instilled in students this year was anti-plagiarism policy. Most of us adults take this as granted and I personally remember learning this concept a lot later in life. As compared to traditional schools an IB School provides a good platform for international learning and makes our kids truly international citizen, something which we parents have dreamt about. I thank all the teachers and school management for the outstanding work they are doing in creating the next breed of confident international citizens that this world of today requires.
