Aligning Academics - Interdisciplinary Unit
The IB philosophy thrives upon transferring knowledge and skills from one discipline to another and MYP IDUs bear testimony to this doctrine. Interdisciplinary Unit is designed in such a way that knowledge gained in one subject is applied in another subject with clear understanding. The GOAL here is to sharpen transfer skills in students. Learning is meaningless until students are able to connect and apply their learning in real life. IDU actually prepares them for the practical application of these ideologies.
Science and PHE (Yoga) were the subjects that were chosen for the alignment of learning in MYP 3. PHE and science IDU (Interdisciplinary unit) task was expected to be a normal day to day task; the kind of task that you can just study for and enhance your knowledge. However when the task was given, it was completely different from what we had expected. The two subjects were so well integrated that we enjoyed it until completion. The concepts we learnt in science one week, the same were being applied in PHE, the next week. It was a good application of knowledge gained on ‘endocrine system’ in Science and its proper functioning with the help of different ‘asanas’ in yoga. The task was mostly activity based and culminated with demonstration of PowerPoint presentations and performing different yoga ‘asanas’.
The integration of two disciplines reflected a clear understanding about the connection between yoga and functioning of endocrine system. The final task was a combination of both. Three ‘asanas’ were performed by each student and surprisingly they could relate them to the glands they affect. Students were encouraged to perform these asanas on a regular basis. The IDU tasks are an amazing way for students to experience different subjects together and in applying knowledge in real life in a unique way.
