A small act is worth a million thoughts
~Ai Weiwei
Action involves demonstration of deeper learning in responsible behavior through responsible action; a manifestation in practice of the other essential elements. In PYP, students have the opportunity and the power to choose to act; to decide on their actions; and to reflect on these actions in order to make a difference to the world. Students can take action in many different ways. Some basic ways in which students take actions are direct action which means person to person or person to environment response for e.g. a student picks up litter even though he/she did not drop it, indirect action which means person to community action for eg. a group of students or a class raises money from a ‘bake sale’ for an organization, advocacy i.e. creating an awareness for eg. a student reminds his/her classmates to recycle waste paper or a group of students create a campaign to recycle and share that information and research for action i.e. learning in action or action in learning for eg. A student borrows a library book on his/her own to extend knowledge about something that was learned or pursues his/ her own inquiry and shares with the class.
There are four essential elements of successful inquiry which provoke students to take a meaningful action. An inquiry should be engaging - which involves learners actively, relevant- that connects with their experiences in life, challenging -which extends further from their prior knowledge and significant - should give opportunity to know importance of understanding human experience.
